This Fixation is Ruining Your Life!

Have you noticed that the Universe goes its merry way paying scant attention to what you want?

Sometimes it seems to be working with you and on your behalf. Sometimes it seems to be bent on frustrating you in ingenious ways.

A lot of the pain and suffering in your life comes from your fixation on bending the Universe to your will. You work hard and expend enormous mental energy on this.

And you do not recognize that, perhaps, your experience of life would become a whole lot better if you let go of this desire to make things go your way.

The old man had been successful in conventional ways.

He had a mansion and a retinue of servants and was well regarded by his peers and relatives.

The king himself consulted him frequently on affairs of import and he was hailed for his wisdom. Some secret sorrow had etched lines on his face, and it was generally believed that this was responsible for the acumen in his advice.

He had never married and had no offspring.

On his eightieth birthday a journalist queried him about this.

“I was determined to find the perfect wife,” the old man reminisced sorrowfully. “I was already successful in business as a youth and was also quite handsome so there was no dearth of suitors. Many business associates and even the queen herself arranged introductions to suitable candidates. They were all nice girls, but none met my stringent specifications. Some were too short. Some were dumpy. Some spoke too much and others were unable to engage with me in intellectual discourse. Some had undesirable friends and others had frivolous interests.

Always there was something lacking.

I traveled to many countries and searched diligently for many years, but I could not find the soulmate that I was seeking.

I had almost given up hope when I found her.

She was the daughter of one of my trading partners and she was perfect. She was comely and well curved in all the right places. There was a bounce to her gait and she had a ready wit. She was well versed in philosophy and could keep me engaged for hours on end. Her friends were serious and civic minded and she was the natural leader in her group.

“She was truly the perfect consort,” said the old man and his face softened as the memories engulfed him.

“Why didn’t you marry her?” asked the journalist curiously.

“Alas,” said the old man shaking his head in sorrow. “She was looking for the perfect husband.”

And that is the way it goes.

You are busy forcing the universe to unfold the way you would like it to. And in this effort you miss the many gifts that are proffered to you.

Your experience of life will improve dramatically if you accept more of what comes your way and become less fixated on wanting things to happen ‘your way’.
